What is Barramundi?

Barramundi, also known as Asian sea bass or giant perch, is a popular fish native to the Indo-Pacific region. The name "barramundi" itself comes from an Aboriginal word meaning "large-scaled river fish."

Barramundi is prized for its mild, sweet, and buttery flavour. Its flesh is white, firm, and flaky, with a moist and succulent texture. It's not considered a "fishy" tasting fish, making it appealing to a wide range of palates. The skin is also edible and can become crispy when cooked.

Wild-Caught vs. Farmed: Barramundi can be found in the wild in coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and rivers. However, a significant portion of the barramundi available commercially is farmed through aquaculture.

  • Wild-caught: Wild barramundi, often found in saltwater estuaries, is generally considered to have a firmer and flakier texture with a clean taste.
  • Farmed: Farmed barramundi can be raised in various environments, including freshwater tanks and sea cages. Farming helps to ensure a consistent supply and can reduce pressure on wild populations.

Sustainability: Farmed barramundi is often highlighted as a sustainable seafood choice. Many farms utilise responsible aquaculture practices, which can reduce environmental impact compared to some wild-caught fisheries. Barramundi are also relatively hardy and can be raised without heavy reliance on antibiotics or hormones.
